LANCASHIRE County Council’s Conservative leader has written to new Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling for more government cash for shire local authorities.

Cllr Geoff Driver believes big city areas are getting to bigger share of Whitehall grants.

He is one of 12 county council leaders from across England to sign the letter to 10 Downing Street.

It tells Mr Johnson: “Your commitment to ‘levelling up’ government investment in all parts of the country is a message that we strongly welcome as leaders of England’s county local authorities.

“For decades our historic shire counties, which contain 25 million people, have been left behind our major cities and urban areas. This is especially true for local government funding.

“You know from your time as London mayor how the capital benefitted from more generous funding to invest its infrastructure and local services while also freezing, and even cutting, council tax.

“It is time our shire counties were given the same opportunities.”

Cllr Driver said: “Mr Johnson knows about local government funding from his time as London Mayor so I hope we are pushing at an open door.”
