Jimmy Rushton from Haslingden had not had a haircut for five and a half years.
His flowing locks had been the subject of many a joke, but in 1980, Mr Rushton finally got the chop, and all for a good cause.
Friends at the Forresters Arms in Haslingden roped him in to a sponsored haircut, and for a fee of 10p a time, customers got the chance to snip away at his 18 inch long tresses, raising an estimated £170 for the Belmont Special School in Rawtenstall.
