A MAN has been left with broken bones and stab wounds after he was attacked with an axe.

The incident happened at around 3am on Monday as the young man, who is in his 20s, was assaulted on Poplar Street in Haslingden by a group of men as he walked home from a night out.

Police believe he was attacked with weapons, including an axe, which caused serious injuries.

He was taken to hospital with a broken arm, a broken leg, two deep cuts to his head and stab wounds to his leg and is due to undergo surgery.

Police are now appealing for information following the assault and would like to speak to anyone who saw all or part of the incident, or who has any other information about it.

DS Sarah Hargreaves, of Burnley CID, said: "This was a nasty incident, which has left a man with serious injuries, and our enquiries are very much ongoing. We are now trying to piece together exactly what occurred and are determined to find those responsible.

"If you saw the incident or saw the men involved, or have any other information that could help with our enquiries, we would urge you to get in touch as soon as possible."
