GRAZING cattle are the only inmates at the site of a Second World War prison camp at Knuzden, marked only by the decaying remains of bunkers and huts.
But soon the field and the little known historical remains will disappear under the bulldozer as work on the M65/M6 link between Whitebirk and Bamber Bridge was to get underway.
It prompted the civic society in the area to ask anyone with any information regarding the site to come forward before a little piece of East Lancashire wartime history finally disappeared.
The historic site was known as Stanhill Camp, between Stanhill and Knuzden, and started as an anti-aircraft gun battery before expanding to become a purpose built prisoner of war camp made of wooden huts.
The camp is currently on display at Oswaldtwistle Mills.
Today, the site is now part of the M65 motorway.
