A PUB landlady has told how she helped a woman and a man seriously injured in a smash involving a motorbike and car. 

Sandra Kirby went to the scene of the crash on Shadsworth Road, Blackburn, at around 6pm on Sunday, after her son heard a loud bang. 

Miss Kirby then said she rushed to help the woman and man who had been on the motorbike which crashed into a black Toyota Yaris.

The 56-year-old, who is the landlady of The Foresters on nearby Fecitt Brow, said: “My son saw it from the upstairs pub window and said he had looked out onto the street and had heard a loud bang.

“The car involved in the crash had gone to turn into the drive of a house on Shadsworth Road and had collided with the motorbike.

“He then saw them both fly off the motorbike and then bounce several times.”

Miss Kirby then said she went out to help the victims and stayed there until paramedics arrived.

She said: “The woman ended up near to a lamppost and was lying down with her head on the road, while the man had ended up near the wall of a house.

“I reassured both of them and stayed with the woman until paramedics arrived, while some other passers by helped the man. 

“They both had to keep their helmets on and we couldn’t move them. 

“I was talking to the woman and keeping her airways clear until the ambulance got here.

She added: “It was horrific but my instinct was just to go out and help.” 

Police said the male driver of the motorbike, in his 50s, and a female passenger suffered serious hip and arm injuries.

They were both taken by ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital.

Nobody in the car was hurt. 

Emergency services including police and the air ambulance attended while residents reported that the road was closed for several hours.

One Shadsworth Road resident said: “I saw two people injured, there was one inside the ambulance and one outside still being worked on by paramedics.

“The road was closed off for more than an hour.

“It was not good at all.”

Another Shadsworth Road resident said: “There was a guy on the floor, there was one car which had some sort of crash from the front.

“I believe it was a motorbike crash.

“At least one of them were taken to hospital.”

A police spokesman said: “We were called just after 6pm yesterday to reports of a serious injury collision on Shadsworth Road, Blackburn.

“The collision involved a black Toyota Yaris car and motorbike.

“A male driver of the motorbike, in his 50s, and female passenger both suffered serious hip and arm injuries.

“They were both taken to Royal Preston Hospital where they are in a serious condition, although their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.”

An ambulance service spokesman said: “We sent an air ambulance, three ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and advanced paramedic to the scene.

“Two people were taken by ambulance to the major trauma centre at Royal Preston Hospital.

“They both looked to be in a serious condition.”

Police are now appealing for potential witnesses to come forward.
