A CYCLIST had to be airlifted to hospital yesterday, Sunday, after 'falling heavily' from her bike while on a moorland track near Guisborough.
Volunteers from Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team were called out to an area near Birk Brow to reports that the 49-year-old woman was badly injured.
The team sent its two Landrover ambulances and managed to locate the woman, who had been out on her mountain bike with her husband, about two kilometres from the nearest road, on a track.
She was treated at the scene and stabilised by paramedics from the North East Ambulance service and a mountain rescue doctor.
Because of her serious injuries and the remote location the Great North Air Ambulance was called out to airlift her to hospital.
The nearest it could land was 200 metres away so mountain rescue volunteers carried her to the waiting helicopter on a specialised stretcher.
