HUNDREDS of revellers turned up to take part in a two-day weekend mini-festival on a Blackburn estate.

They enjoyed live bands, family activities and a wide variety of street food to celebrate the diversity of Romney Walk’s community.

The fine weather saw 400 local residents and visitors from further afield make the third annual Romney Voices Family Shindig the biggest so far.

Cally Kershaw-Calvert, vice chairman of the organising committee, said: “It was a great event and we had more than 400 people turn up on the first day. We’ve been doing this for three yeas and it was the biggest-ever.

“The weather was fine and we got not just people from the estate and Blackburn but from places such as Accrington.

“It’s now not just a Romney Walk and Blackburn festival but has turned into a major East Lancashire event.

“This weekend shows what you can do when you celebrate a community and its diversity and how much people have in common.

“Work starts on next year’s shindig now. All the bands said how much they enjoyed it and want to come back.”

The fun continues today and, over the weekend, 18 live acts performed with leading local band Inciders headlining. There was a bucking bronco, facepainting and a mini-fun fair and traditional garden fete for youngsters.

Romney Voices, chaired by Eileen Thompson, has received funding for the festival from Shadsworth and Whitebirk Big Local, the Great Get Together and the Jo Cox Foundation.
