AN entertaining spoof of a traditional 1920s’ musical is being served up by Blackburn Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

The Drowsy Chaperone, which opens at the Blackburn Empire Theatre tonight and runs until Saturday, is a light-hearted romp featuring some great tunes and a whole host of laughs.

David Kennedy, chairman of Blackburn G&S, said: “The music just comes to life on stage. It might be a lesser known musical but I think everyone who comes along will be really surprised.

“It’s also very funny. We’ve got gangsters, a starlet, wedding day drama and a chaperone who is somewhat fond of her drink. It’s a great recipe for an entertaining night out.”

The cast includes a number of familiar faces from the East Lancashire theatre scene including Deborah Thew as the socialite Janet van de Graff, Lyndsay Pilkington as the chaperone, John Kearns as Adolpho, Robin Reid as film producer Feldzeig and Paul Cross as the bridegroom.

The Drowsy Chaperone was first performed in 1998 and in 2006 enjoyed a run on Broadway before transferring to London’s West End with Elaine Paige in a starring role.
