THERE may finally be some light at the end of the tunnel for frustrated residents who have been struggling for years with the water network in their area.

For many living in Baxenden, burst pipes and water shortages have been part of their daily life for several years.

But back in February, United Utilities announced that they would be carrying out major repair works to stop the long-running problem in the village.

The announcement came after more than 60 homes were left temporarily without water last year.

Village activist Kimberley Whitehead said that while she is pleased to see progress being made, she feels that everyone in the village has been ‘more than patient’ when it comes to work being carried out.

Ms Whitehead, who recently campaigned as a candidate in the local elections said: “I am glad to see progress being made for residents and local businesses.

“People just want to be kept informed and reassured things are being done to prevent further disruption. It’s been an very frustrating and difficult situation for everyone.”

Bosses at the water company have now announced that they will be holding a public meeting for residents in the area to attend and find out more about the work they will be carrying out.

A United Utilities spokesperson said: “This is great news for residents in parts of Baxenden. We are absolutely committed to providing the area with a much more robust water supply.”

“We realise work on this scale can impact people getting on with their daily routine and we hope by explaining first-hand the work we need to carry out, people can plan ahead.”

“Our main priority now is to let as many people know as possible what is happening and we will be happy to answer questions at our information day”

The company has written to over 2000 properties and will continue to keep the community aware as work progresses.”

Ms Whitehead added: “I will be attending their public session and advise others to do so if they have any questions. The last event was well attended and residents found it helpful. “

The event will take place at at Baxenden Cricket Club, Back Lane, Accrington, BB5 2RE, on Tuesday 11 June between 2pm and 6.30pm.
