Young campaigners will be taking part in a day of action on Saturday as they battle to raise awareness of food poverty.

Youngsters from the Blackburn with Darwen Food Alliance will be joined by local councillors, activists and speakers as they demonstrate to tackle food poverty through their Darwen Gets Hangry campaign.

Darwen Gets Hangry is led by the council's public health directorate and Together Lancashire, as part of the Food Power programme, to encourage organisations to work together to be more effective in how they deal with food poverty.

Food Power Empowerment Programme Officer, Ben Pearson, said: "Food Power is a national program aimed to strengthen community ability to reduce food poverty through people-powered change.

"Just a few weeks back the Children’s Future Food Inquiry was delivered to Downing Street by Dame Emma Thompson and a group of young ambassadors, including Corey McPartland from Darwen.

"With one in three children living in poverty, the inquiry presented some alarming findings and recommended increasing the meal allowance in secondary schools as well as calling for an independent children’s food watchdog."

The day of action will be captured on film by local filmmaker, Broden Salmon, and will eventually feature in ‘Edgelands’, a short film inspired by the lives of those experiencing food insecurity in Blackburn with Darwen.

The film will launch at the Food Power conference in Newcastle in June before a series of local screenings.

Mr Pearson, added: "What young people in Darwen have achieved so far is incredible, I hope the day of action sends a powerful message to both local people and those in positions of power that children experiencing food poverty is something we should all be angry about.

"By involving those who have experienced it first had ensures we tackle the issue in an informed way, with solutions coming from those at a grassroots level.

"It’s not right young people are going hungry, its right they are angry, eager to raise awareness of the issue and challenge the stigma.

"Join them and help send a powerful message, telling those in power there’s need for change."

Darwen Gets Hangry will take place at St Peters Church, Darwen, on Saturday May 25 from 12pm until 2pm.
