Every week we try to suggest some of the best establishments connected to food and drink around East Lancashire. This week we turn our attention to wine bars.

Not pubs or nightclubs, these are establishments where you can call in for a drink and be sure of having a wide choice of reds, whites and spirits. Some also serve food and the atmosphere is both relaxed and friendly.

This this is not meant to be a definitive list, more a selection of the fine establishments out there. If we have not included your favourite, we’d love to hear from you.

Tiger Lounge, Oswaldtwistle

Gaining a reputation for hosting parties, it’s the diverse range of cocktails which has put the Tiger Lounge on the map and have earned comments such as “delicious cocktails....each one a work of art and also very potent”. The friendly service is frequently mentioned in reviews as is the stylish interior and relaxed atmosphere.With the warmer weather upon us there is also an outdoor seating area which, no doubt, will prove popular. A limited number of cask ales and bottle beers are also available if you’re not in the mood for a cocktail.

The Whalley Wine Shop

OK, so it’s not a wine bar in the conventional sense but public opinion cannot be ignored and the number of readers who had something good to say about the Whalley Wine Shop meant it had to be included. Primarily a wine merchants with a very knowledgeable staff, you can try a glass and watch the world go by. In summer it’s a particularly pleasant experience as the outdoor area becomes a social hub for the village.

Will's, Barrowford

A relative newcomer, it’s hard to believe that with its quirky yet stylish interior, Will’s is situated in a former Spar shop. Reviews are unanimous about the great levels of service and the great atmosphere and a wide selection of wines and casked beers are always available. Recently the establishment has also introduced a wood fired pizza menu which has gone down well with customers.

Artisan Cafe and Wine Bar, Darwen

Equally popular for meeting up with friends for a drink or taking a break from shopping, Artisan caters for all with an interesting selection of wines and cocktails.There is also a varied choice of food ranging from a breakfast menu to tapas which means you can enjoy the best of both worlds. Cask ales and occasional wine tastings are also on offer.

The Corkhouse, Burnley

When you describe yourself as a wine boutique you’ve got to know what you’re doing or face ridicule. Thankfully, the large, thriving establishment in Burnley has proved to be a hugely popular addition to the town centre. Customer service is at the forefront of what they do here and this backed by a large wine list, some unusual cocktails choices and a wide range of gins. Food is also available and there is also a shop.
