COUNTY Hall bosses have decided to shut the travel information centre Nelson transport interchange but keep its Clitheroe counterpart open.

In May consideration of the closures was shelved.while officials explores approaches from third parties interested in taking them over.

But tomorrow (THURSDAY) Lancashire County Council's Cabinet has been recommended to shut the Nelson information centre and transfer the Clitheroe equivalent to the town's branch of Community Rail Lancashire.

Officers said its application 'provided a comprehensive and well thought out proposal outlining the objectives and vision of the group to maintain the existing service and having taken full consideration of the staffing commitments and risks'.

But they have recommended the senior councillors to reject the bid by an individual to take over the Nelson information centre as lacking financial information and needing grant support from the authority.

County Cllr Mohammed Iqbal, who represents Brierfield and Nelson West, said: "This is an appalling decision.

" It is a dark day for Nelson's users of public transport."

Cllr Stephen Atkinson, leader of Ribble Valley Borough Council, said: "I welcome keeping of the Clitheroe transport interchange travel information centre open.

"It's a good decision."

The cabinets has been recommended to close the information centre on Preston Bus Station but transfer its counterpart on Carnforth Railway Station to the Leeds-Morecambe Line community group.

The original proposal aimed to save the county council to save £156,000 a year.
