Members of the LGBT community received a free haircut from college students.

Ten students from Blackburn College organised and hosted a free hairdressing event for members of the LGBT community currently engaged with a Lancashire County Council (LCC) service.

Lee Thistlethwaite, Level 3 Barbering tutor at Blackburn College said: “I’m proud to teach students who not only demonstrate a high level of technical skill in their craft, but understand the importance of using their talents to give back to the local community. Thank you to Thomas and all our Barbering students who truly exemplify the type of student Blackburn College nurtures."

Spearheaded by student Thomas Mayfield, The Zone in Leyland was transformed into a makeshift barber shop for the evening.

Mr Mayfield said: “Through LCC, I was put in touch with Amanda Kaley, who runs Power To Be Out (POUT), which is a support group for LGBT teenagers aged 13-18.

“As many of these teenagers feel isolated within their own homes, this group supports members by enabling them to spend time with others within the LGBT community.”

The student was keen to use his skills as an aspiring barber to benefit the local community. He leveraged local industry contacts to sponsor the event.
