THIS picture shows the old Grammar School in Freckleton Street, Blackburn.

Dug out from the Lancashire Telegraph's archives, the image shows the school looking across the graveyard of St Peter's Church.

The single-storey school was built on Bull Meadow in 1825 and the ivy-covered master's house (right) was added in 1835.

Originally, the school - established in 1567 by a royal charter by Queen Elizabeth I - was housed in the Lady Chapel on the south side of the old parish church and later in purpose-built premises erected in the churchyard.

In 1882, the school moved from Freckleton Street to West Park Road, near Corporation Park.

The classical pillar, seen left at the junction with St Peter's Street, was erected in 1853 by pupils as a memorial to Thomas Atkinson, headmaster for 20 years. It now stands at the school's present-day site.
