CASH discovered last year by Lancashire County Council in the coffers of a dormant education trust is set be spent on a town's children and young people.

Veteran Pendle councillor Kathleen Shore is determined that up to £20,000 left untouched since 2009 should now be used.

The Clover Hill Labour representative has been appointed as a new trustee of the Marsden Heights Educational Foundation which was set up to help hard-up Nelson students.

In September last year the county council's Cabinet identified that the trust had been dormant since de-registration with the Charities Commission in 2009.

It was originally established to assist pupils from the ancient township of Little Marsden (in particular Marsden Heights).

Now the county has appointed its deputy leader and Ribble Vally North-East councillor Albert Atkinson as its trustee of the foundation and Pendle Borough had selected Cllr Shore and her Clover Hill ward Labour colleague Wayne Blackburn as its representatives.

Now there will be a trustees' meeting after the local council elections in May to agree how the money linked to Marsden Heights Educational Foundation will be spent.

Cllr Shore, 88, who previously served as one of its trustees, said: "I shall be there.

"I understand there is £20,000 still in the Foundation.

"I want it see it spent as it should be on young people in Nelson who need help and their education.

"Once we have distributed this money as intended, the trust can be wound up."
