Police investigating an alleged sexual assault have established that no offences have taken place.

It was reported at around 1.45am on Friday that a woman had been sexually assaulted on the canal tow path, close to Thompson Park in Burnley.

At the time, officers said they were trying to establish exactly what had occurred, and patrols were stepped up in the area to offer reassurance to residents.

A cordon was put up next to some construction work taking place under the bridge but no arrests were made.

On Monday, a spokesperson for the police said: "We investigated the alleged incident, and over the weekend it was established that no offences had occurred.

"We are no longer looking into the matter."
