Primary schools across East Lancashire are being invited to nominate themselves for an award as part of the Lancashire Science Festival, which will take place at the end of June.

Organised by social enterprise, Newground, the awards, called Green Hero Education Awards, recognise and reward pupils and staff who show dedication to the environment, through work they've been doing over the last 12 months.

Education and Training Coordinator at Newground, Dan McDermott, said: "The Green Hero Education Awards are a great opportunity to celebrate the environmental achievements of primary schools across Lancashire.

"Examples of schools that have won in the past include those with innovative waste minimisation initiatives, sensory or wildlife gardens, food growing schemes and ethical purchasing policies."

The awards, which have been running for more than 10 years, are open to all primary schools in Lancashire, and shortlisted schools will be invited to spend the day at the Science Festival, which takes place at the University of Central Lancashire from June 27-29.

There are five award categories that schools can nominate themselves in, which focus on a range of environmental topics.

These include the Global Citizenship Award, which recognises schools where pupils consider the impacts of their actions on both local and global communities, and the Waste Savers Award, which recognises schools who can demonstrate their waste minimisation methods and the ways in which they reduce, reuse, repair and recycle.

Mr McDermott added: "Whatever you're doing at school to reduce your carbon footprint, we want to hear from you."

Nominations will be judged by a panel made up of local environmental experts, who will also nominate a Green School of the Year.
