An online petition calling on the government to revoke Article 50 and cancel Brexit has attracted more than four million signatures, including more than 6,000 people from Westmorland and Lonsdale.

The petition, started in late February, is currently the second most popular submitted to the parliament website and has the highest rate of sign-ups on record, according to the official Petitions Committee.

The official website has crashed numerous time since the petition leapt in popularity on Wednesday following Theresa May’s appeal to the British people to support her as she demanded MPs back her deal.

Despite a further crash this morning, the figure at 1pm stood at 4.2m.

Westmorland and Lonsdale, where the vote was to remain in the 2016 referendum, has seen 6,291 people sign or 8.2% of the electorate.

The Barrow and Furness figure makes up 3,249 of the electorate, while in Copeland 3,042 have signed.
