A family was rescued from a taxi after being stranded in floodwater yesterday morning.

Firefighters from Carlisle's east and west stations along with colleagues from Longtown attended the incident.

The crew had to use swift water rescue skills to bring the two adults and two children to safety.

They were helped from the vehicle after it became stranded in Rickerby Park at Carlisle.

The drama unfolded around 12.30am during the heavy rain overnight.

The family of four was walked to safety by fire crews, and no medical treatment was needed.

The incident was one of a number resulting from the heavy rain which swept across the area over the weekend.

Two vehicles became stuck in floodwater on the A684 on Saturday afternoon, one near Hawes and one near Garsdale, with two people being rescued by fire crews at each incident, and fire crews who also rescued an elderly couple stranded in their car by floodwater in Horton-in-Ribblesdale.  

Fire crews also attended an incident close to the River Lune at Hornby on Saturday evening when a car was also trapped in flood water.

Two casualties were rescued by fire service personnel wearing flood suits and the car was removed by the fire crews with help from a local farmer. Crews were detained for 40 minutes.

And Langdale/Ambleside mountain rescue teams we were involved in a lengthy operation to assist a despondent male on Great Rigg on Saturday evening.

With assistance from Kendal and Patterdale MRTs and a Coastguard helicopter, he was recovered to Carlisle Infirmary.

Finally on Sunday, a walker sustained a knee injury when he slipped on wet ground in Great Langdale and was treated by MRT members and evacuated from the fells.
