VILLAGERS in Barrowford were not happy when in January 1982, Pendle Council proposed to paint double yellow lines in front of their only pharmacy and neighbouring pub, the White Bear Hotel.

So frustrated were residents, that an 800-signature petition was created, backed up by 300 letters of support objecting to the proposed parking restrictions in Gisburn Road.

Some of the objections said that it was ridiculous to restrict parking in front of the pharmacy where elderly people may want to park and argued that the nearest car park was quite some distance away.

And landlord of the White Bear Hotel, Richard Thornber, said he was already experiencing congestion in the pub's car park.

The petition was handed to Nelson and Colne MP John Lee, in the hope that Pendle Council would reconsider their proposals.
