A CREATIVE seven-year-old who was inspired to write about homelessness after learning about rough sleepers at school enlisted the help of her great-grandad to put pen to paper.

Janey Grace Charnley, a pupil at St James Primary School in Lower Darwen, said she wanted to write a poem after her school taught her year group about the issues faced by those who live on the streets.

And when her piece was complete, she took it in to school to read out in front of her class.

Janey said: "When our teachers told us about homeless people, it made me sad. I see lots of them when I am walking around the streets and sometimes they look cold and like they need help.

"I wanted to write a poem about what I had learnt so I went to grandad's and he helped me."

Lancashire Telegraph:

Robert Proctor was only too happy to sit down with his great-granddaughter to help with her project.

He said: "I'm very proud of Janey — she loves school and is very creative. It took us a few sessions to get the poem finished, but when we were done we asked if she could take it in to school to read it out in front of her classmates and teachers."

Lancashire Telegraph:

Grandad Bob added: "We are best mates and I love helping her with her projects and homework."
