DENTAL DILEMMAS – Dr Karim Rachidi from Synergy Dental Clinics helps with advice on dental problems

Q. I hate going to the dentist. What can I do at home to make sure I don’t visit more than I need to?

A. It’s only normal to feel apprehensive about visiting your dentist but it’s still important to go for a check-up at least twice a year, just to see that your teeth are in the best condition they can be – and whilst you’re there make sure you listen to their advice as well!

The most common causes of tooth loss are tooth decay and gum disease – both of these can be avoided just by following your dentist’s advice and ensuring some good personal habits to help your teeth.

Consuming foods and drinks that are full of sugar or are acidic can cause tooth decay, therefore if you reduce the frequency of those it will help a lot. Try and have fizzy drinks through a straw and if you snack regularly go for fruit, nuts or cheese instead of crisps, chocolates and sweets!

Gum disease is caused when there is a build-up of plaque on your teeth – which contains harmful bacteria. Some of the symptoms of gum disease include red, swollen gums and bleeding whilst brushing.

The best way to avoid any type of harm to your teeth is to simply make sure that you’re brushing your teeth twice a day and taking extra care to clean in between your teeth throughout the day – either by flossing or using interdental brushes. Another great option is chewing sugar-free gum, as it helps your mouth produce more saliva – which is your mouth’s natural cleaning system.
