A MAN who was left in a critical condition after he was hit twice by a BMW in a targeted attack had to have his leg amputated.

Ejaz Shah was given life-saving surgery after Waqas Iftikhar Hussain, 27, mowed him down outside the Hare and Hounds in Clayton-le-Moors in June 2017.

Hussain, of Revidge Road, Blackburn, appeared at Preston Crown Court where he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

The court heard how Hussain, who was disqualified from driving at the time, drove a black BMW ‘at speed’ into Mr Shah before reversing back and driving into him for a second time.

His victim suffered a severed leg, which was later amputated, and a dislocated shoulder. Members of the public rushed to Mr Shah’s aid as an ambulance was called, while Hussain fled to the countryside. A long-stemming family feud was heard to be the reason for the attack.

Judge Heather Lloyd told the court that the actions of ‘cowardly’ Hussain, who continues to deny his involvement, had changed his victim’s life forever.

She said: “You used a BMW as a weapon, driving it at Mr Shah at speed, severing his leg. Horrified members of the public came to his aid and may well have saved his life by applying a tourniquet to his leg.

“You then drove off into the countryside where you were not alone in the car. You were then picked up in another car and driven away. You have lied to police ever since. This has been a traumatic and life-changing for him and his family.”

Hussain was found guilty, after a trial, of wounding with intent and affray. The court also heard he was serving a suspended sentence at the time for another dangerous driving offence.

Surmising that Hussain had shown ‘no remorse’, Judge Lloyd said: “You did not care that you were breaching a court order and potentially putting innocent people at risk.” He was jailed for 14 years and four months.
