NEWS that the cones on the A591 south of Kendal are staying in place for the time being has prompted criticism of Cumbria County Council (CCC).

The roadworks on the stretch from the junction with the A6 to Brettargh Holt roundabout, which began in October, were undertaken to repair two flood damaged culverts below the A591, but additional work including resurfacing has subsequently taken place, and though a contraflow system has now been lifted, lane closures have remained in operation.

Three were hopes the roadworks would finally be lifted this week, but a spokesperson for the county council said further work was now taking place to replace the crash barriers at the crossover points on the dual carriageway.

The spokesperson said this work necessitated continuing lane closures, though it is hoped this work will be finished “by the end of this month.”

“The county council just seem to find it impossible to co-ordinate any work and that not only means more disruptions but also more costs to the taxpayer,” said CCC Conservative group leader Cllr James Airey.
