A PROJECT which has helped Blackburn youngsters into employment, training, volunteering and other support has been praised.

After receiving funding from police and crime commissioner Clive Grunshaw's community action fund, the Blackburn with Darwen Youth Awareness Project has helped at least ten into employment, ten into training and more have been signposted to training opportunities and other support services.

Providing drop in sessions across the Audley and Queens Park wards in Blackburn, the programme provides young people an opportunity to develop social skills and employability and helps to develop positive progression in their lives.

Mr Grunshaw said: "It has been great to meet the team and see what the project is doing here, talking to young people who otherwise may not be as willing to engage and helping them get support and highlight opportunities.

"This is exactly what my community action fund is all about, supporting local groups who are aware of local needs and what will help in their area and address local concerns.

"Building safe and confident communities in a key priority in my police and crime plan and projects like this provide real value for money and make a big difference across the county."

Mohammed Kathrada, project development and volunteer manager at Blackburn with Darwen Youth Awareness Project, added: "The grant received from the community action fund, not only provided the project with the ability to provide advice and guidance to young people around drugs and alcohol and mental health issues and signposting to local services but also provide support around education, employment, training and volunteering."
