STEVE Stone praised striker Dan Agyei after his match-winning double helped fire Burnley Under-23s to a 3-0 win over Hull on Friday.

Agyei scored twice with Rob Harker also on target as the Clarets youngsters made it three wins on the spin.

And Stone felt Agyei, who now has 17 goals to his name at Under-23 level, is progressing well for the Clarets.

“Dan was the real positive,” said Stone of the 21-year-old.

“I said to him at half-time, ‘you will win us this game. You have the power and the pace to win this game, no problem’.

“He did that, but he has to believe in himself and believe in what’s got. And if he does, he’s got a chance of making a decent career.”

Stone was also pleased to see his side maintain their winning mentality as the three points kept alive their hopes of a play-off push.

“It’s great the lads have come away with a victory after not playing great,” he added. “There have been periods in the past when we haven’t played great and not won, so that’s the pleasing thing, that the winning mentality continues.

“I could see how much it meant to the lads afterwards, how they’ve kept this winning run going, because they’ve been brilliant lately.

“That’s the mentality we’re trying to instil in them.”

The result keeps Burnley in second place, a point behind Leeds United at the top of the Professional Development League.

And although pleased with the result, Stone still sees room for improvement from his youngsters.

“It wasn’t how we wanted to play,” he said of the win over bottom of the table Hull City.

“The disappointing thing is how we passed the ball. The quality needs to be better.

“We’re delighted with the win because we’ve won 3-0 and not played well. But things need to be better.”
