VANDALS have struck again at a historic glasshouse at the centre of a Victorian open space.

Several panes of glass have been smashed at Blackburn’s Corporation Park conservatory.

It is the latest damage caused by repeated attacks on the 1857 building by vandals.

Whinney Lane resident Tommy Temperley has called on Blackburn with Darwen Council to do more to protect the conservatory.

He said: “It is such a shame. It is a very fine building put up for the enjoyment of the people of the town.

“The council needs to do more to protect it from vandals and to refurbish it so people can use it more.

“In its current damaged, run-down state it is becoming a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

“Perhaps a special group could be set up to revive it?”

Council deputy leader Cllr Phil Riley said: “We are obviously disappointed at this latest vandalism but there is only so much we can do to protect it.

“The council cannot afford to have on-site security in the middle of the night.

“There is already a Corporation Park Supporters Group and I suggest Mr Temperley joins that.”
