A large fire has broken out at a derelict school.

Six fire engines, including an aerial ladder platform, were called to the blaze at the old Ivy Bank School on Bryon Street, Padiham, at around 1.50pm on Sunday.

A fire service spokesperson said: "We have six fire engines at the old Ivy Bank School on Byron Street, Padiham.

"Residents in the area should keep their windows and doors shut, and keep out of the smoke plume."

In a video taken by Twitter user, Ashley Brown, at around 2.30pm, smoke and flames could be seen billowing from the site.

By 3.30pm all six fire engines were still in attendance.

The old school, which has four floors, is approximately 30m x 30m, and firefighters have said they could be at the incident for some time in order bring it under control and prevent further spread.

No injuries have been reported, but the cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious.

The building has been empty since 2006 after the school merged with Habergham High School to form Hameldon Community College.

And since then it has been plagued by trouble.

In December the school was set alight by a group of youths who had entered the building and started a fire in one of the rooms.

And two years ago, around 20 firefighters tackled a blaze at the school for more than three hours after flames swept through the second floor.
