A BUSINESS is said to be back on track following the completion of a building refurbishment which was delayed due to the partial collapse of its premises.

Owner of Burnley’s Northwest Plumbing and Electrical Ltd, Ajmal Khan, says he is overjoyed after the renovation was finalised on Wednesday.

It was expected to take just two weeks but had been delayed by three months after the roof of the building collapsed during the early refurbishment stages last October.

Roads were closed at the junction of Liverpool Road, Rossendale Road and Accrington Road, Burnley, where the building was located, after the top floor of the building came down after a beam column, supporting the extension, snapped.

The local authority, Burnley Council, forced the business to cease trading for several days and around £50,000 has been spent on repairs of the Rosegrove building instead of just £10,000, which was allocated to the refurbishment prior to the collapse.

Mr Khan, who owns a second business in Colne, said there were times when he regretted the decision to ever start the renovation, which has cost him £40,000 more than initially expected.

The 38-year-old, from Nelson, said: “A few times I asked myself why I started doing the refurbishment.

“There was nothing I could do. All I could do is just try to finish what had been started.”

Following the repairs, the main changes to the building include a bigger entrance and more space to work in.

Despite the three-month ordeal, the company director said he is happy to be finished.

Mr Khan added: “It has been really nice. We have gone through a lot of problems but I’m happy overall because everything has been worth it.”

Burnley Council leader Mark Townsend, who headed the local authority during the ordeal, commended the business for getting through a difficult time.

The Labour councillor said: “I’m really pleased that the business has come through a troubling time for them and to know they will continue and go on and thrive in the future.”
