A PASSENGER was taken to hospital with back injuries after a car crashed into a lamppost.

Police officers were called to Bocholt Way and Bacup Road junction in Rawtenstall after a red Volkswagen Polo crashed into the lamppost on the opposite side of the road.

The incident happened at 12.15am on January 24 but an appeal has only just been released.

The driver, a19-year-old man from Waterfoot, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and has been released under investigation.

A driver of a second Volkswagen Polo, a 19-year-old woman from Rossendale, was traced and arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and was also released under investigation.

Sgt Lee Harris said: "We are trying to build up a picture of what happened in the time leading up to this collision and believe there may have been other vehicles being driven at speed in the area.
