A 65-year-old man went on a drinking binge after learning his 31-year-old partner was still seeing other men.

Blackburn magistrates heard Anthony Phillip Edrich believed she had been going to hotels with other men despite him confronting her about her fidelity.

Edrich, of Marsden Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner.

He was fined £80 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Parveen Akhtar, prosecuting, said Edrich had returned home after drinking and accused his partner of "developing a liking for Asian men".

She tried to leave the address and he grabbed her by the throat and pushed her to the floor.

She managed to push him off and ran outside to call the police.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client had been trying to help the younger woman wither her problems.

"She has admitted she has spent time in hotels with various men," said Mr Taylor.

"He has confronted her and said if we are having a relationship it should be exclusive.

"That wasn't taken on board and when he found out she had been with other men again he went out and drank too much."

Mr Taylor said it would have been very unpleasant for the victim but there were no injuries as a result of the attack.
