FARMLAND on the outskirts of Darwen could be the site for four new self-build houses.

The proposed detached executive properties would dovetail with a government initiative to encourage people to construct or commission their own homes.

Businessman John Sturgess has applied for planning permission in principle for the construction of the four houses on a one acre site at Fickle Hall Farm on Duckshaw Road.

If approved the four properties would be among the first built in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen since it introduced a register for self-build plots of land as required b y the government in 2016.

So far just six sites have been registered.

If permission in principle is granted each plot could be worth up to £150,000.

Cllr Phil Riley, Blackburn with Drawen Council regeneration boss, said self-build homes could be a welcome addition to the housing mix in the borough.

Mr Sturgess said: “The government is encouraging the growth of self-build homes.

“This scheme would contribute to this and to the mix of properties in the borough.

"The will be four and five-bedroomed detached executive homes.

"Hopefully it will help the council in meeting its requirements for self-build homes.

"We will be selling the land for people to build their own homes or commission someone to build one to their design. I can help with archintects, designers, other professionals and tradesman for their schemes."

Cllr Riley said: "This application is to be welcomed

"We have a register for land designated for self-build houses.

"They can contribute to the mix , variety and individuality of homes in the borough."

Supporting documents for the application say: "The boundary is clearly of a size which would permit for the construction of four dwellings which has the potential to respect the vernacular and enhance the local sense of character. Therefore, any future technical application will seek to ensure the design of the properties will fit well in the rural setting and nearby properties, as will the choice of materials.

The housing minister Brandon Lewis said in 2016: "Many other countries have a track record of delivering large numbers of local homes through self-build. We’re determined to double the number of custom and self build homes by 2020 – so anyone who wishes to design their dream house can do so."
