Gangs from large cities are targeting Lancashire teenagers in order to peddle drugs.

Police have issued a warning to parents, explaining that the gangs, who come from Manchester, Liverpool and even as far away as London, look for children who blend in, and more often than not will target children from nice areas.

Posting on social media, Lancashire Police said: "Do you think your child could become a drug dealer? Gangs from Manchester, Liverpool, and London use Lancashire teens to store, transport, and sell drugs.

"They look for kids who blend in, including kids from nice areas."

Officers are asking parents to keep an eye on their child's mobile phone activity, as they believe a lot of communication with gang members will be done over social media.

The post went on to say: "Who really knows what their children are doing on their phones every night? They could be unknowingly chatting to a gang member over social media, they could be receiving instructions or directions by text, or they could be being threatened.

"If you've noticed a change in your child's behaviour, they may be being groomed to be a drugs runner.

"It's easy for teens to be drawn in. Cash, gifts, status, and protection are all appealing. But, before they know it they're being trafficked around the country, couriering drugs and cash, operating under threat."

Police are now urging parents to spot changes in the behaviour of their kids and look out for children who are going missing from home or school, are in a relationship with someone older and controlling, have unexplained injuries, have multiple phones or are receiving more calls or texts.

They also want parents to be aware that some children may have taken to carrying knives, or may suddenly have lots of money or new clothes.

Anyone with concerns about a child they believe may have become involved in such activity should call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
