A REGIMENT from East Lancashire who fought during the First World War will be remembered in a church service next month.

The Accrington Pals' annual memorial service will take place at St John's with St Augustine's Parish Church, Accrington, in four weeks' time.

After leaving their hometowns in February 1915, the Pals journeyed to The Somme region in France where, on July 1, 1916, the majority of the battalion were injured or killed in action.

Letters have been sent out to locals inviting them to the service on Sunday, February 17 and people have asked to bring a photograph of a relative who fought in The Great War.

One of the organisers, Shelly Whitehead, says in the letter: "As this service is the first since we commemorated the end of hostilities over a century ago, we would like to open up the service to the memory of the men who served from Accrington during the Great War, and in this vein, we are asking everyone to bring a photograph of their relative to show during the service."
