A WOMAN was taken to hospital after being injured in a collision with a police car attending an emergency call. 

The police vehicle had been attending an incident when it was involved in a collision with a Toyota Aygo car on Henry Street in Church at around 4.35pm yesterday. 

The driver of the Toyota, a 56-year-old woman from Accrington, had to be cut of her car and suffered a hip and leg injury. She has been taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

The two police officers in the Hyundai i30 sustained minor injuries.

The road was closed for four and a half hours for collision investigation.

A police spokesman said: "A police car has been involved in a collision with a vehicle in Accrington.

"The incident occurred at around 4.35pm yesterday (Tuesday, January 22), when a Toyota Aygo car and police car collided on Henry Street.

"The driver of the Toyota, a 56-year-old woman from Accrington, suffered hip and leg injuries and has been taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

"The incident will be referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and our enquiries are on-going."

A police spokesman added: "The police vehicle had been attending an emergency incident and the vehicle's blue lights and sirens were activated."

An Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) spokesman said: “We are aware of the incident and have received a referral from Lancashire Constabulary. This will be assessed to see if it requires an investigation.”

The accident caused queuing traffic on nearby Hyndburn Road while police patrolled the scene. 

The black Toyota has been left destroyed following the collision.

A fire service spokesman said two fire engines from Hyndburn were scrambled to the scene. 

A spokesman said: "Two cars had collided and a casualty was trapped in one of the vehicles.

"Firefighters used hydraulic equipment to cut the roof of a car to release the casualty, who was taken to hospital by ambulance."

An eyewitness at the scene said: "I saw flashing lights of police cars and fire engines and an ambulance.

"The road was closed off. 

"A black Toyota had been damaged and fire crews were cutting a woman out of the car.

"She was then taken in the ambulance.

"I hope she is okay and I'm just shocked at what has happened."

Another resident added: "I only saw the aftermath of what happened.

"There were emergency services at the scene and they were cutting a woman out of the car."

Police are now appealing for potential witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Michael Higginson of Lancashire's Road Policing Unit, said: “If you witnessed the collision or have any information that could help with our investigation, please let us know.”
