AN ASIAN girl has scored a notable double first to win Miss Lancashire after battling it out in the final of the contest on Sunday.

Aysha Khan, a would-be teacher from Blackburn, took home the crown, becoming the first Muslim and Asian woman to win.

The 20-year-old student was among 24 finalists at the Preston Playhouse.

She said: “Everything still feels so surreal. It’s taking a while for it to sink in. All the girls were so amazing, so winning the title is a great honour. I’m just taking it all step-by-step to process.”

Aysha’s mum, Ruksana Ali, who says she is her daughter’s biggest fan, was overcome with pride at the win.

She said: “As parents you always want to see your children succeed in life and have the opportunity to realise their dreams. This is something I have encouraged all my children to do from an early age.

“Aysha has grown in leaps and bounds this past year. I am extremely proud of her achievements and will continue to support her and all my children with their endeavours.”

In order to prepare for the finals, Miss Khan took part in several fund-raising projects, including a trip to her old primary school, where she held a ‘spread your wings’ activity, encouraging young people to follow their dreams.

Miss Khan added: “I feel honoured, truly.

“I’m hoping to inspire other Asian girls to now sign themselves up for pageants as they would any other opportunity.

“My goal was to show a different side to what they’re all about and I’ve had an amazing response from people so far.”

The new Miss Lancashire is now on course for the Miss England contest, as only those with a title can enter.

She said: “This will include tons more charity work and community events.

“So many exciting things planned, which will all be revealed in the near future.”

Miss Lancashire 2017/18, Elle Finch, presented the 2018/19 crown to Miss Khan.
