AN elderly woman was robbed in her own home and threatened with an iron bar in a ‘despicable’ attack.

Police were called at shortly before 1pm today after the men forced their way into the home of the 73-year-old victim on Southwood Drive, Baxenden.

The offenders threatened the woman with an iron bar and attacked her leaving her with wrist injuries.

She was taken to hospital for treatment.

The burglars stole cash before leaving towards Manchester Road.

They are described as white, around 6ft tall, one wearing a grey body warmer and the other dressed all in black.

Police are now appealing for help to trace the two men.

Detective sergeant Sarah Hargreaves, of East CID, said: “This is a despicable attack on an elderly woman in her own home and it is fortunate that the injuries sustained are not more serious as there was clearly complete disregard for this lady by these two offenders.

“We have a team of officers and staff making enquiries are we are actively trying to trace these men but I would urge anyone who sees them or who has any information to contact us as a matter of urgency.”

Cllr Terry Hurn, who represents Baxenden on Hyndburn Council, described the attack as disgusting.

He said: “A lady of senior age shouldn’t have to endure this. It’s unbelievable.

“It makes you wonder what we’re coming to and absolutely beggars belief.

“Baxenden is a quiet area and this isn’t what you’d expect and you don’t expect it anywhere for that matter.

“My thoughts are with the woman and I hope she’s okay and that the police catch the perpetrators.

“I don’t think there are enough police on the streets and we need to see more.”

Cllr Kath Pratt, who also represents the area on Hyndburn Council, said: "It's unbelievable that anyone could attack an elderly woman in broad daylight in her own home.

"I'm astounded and shocked.

"I hope the perpetrators are caught."
