A MISS Lancashire finalist revisited her old primary school to get youngsters to think about spreading their wings when they are older.

Aysha Khan, a student from Blackburn, decided to raise money for children’s charity Variety by asking children at Sacred Heart Primary School in the town to write their dreams on a feather, then stick them to angel wings.

The students paid £1 for each feather they wrote on, raising over £100 on the activity alone.

Miss Khan has done charity work before but this time decided to take the unconventional approach to raising money.

The 20-year-old said: “I’m hoping to take this project further and do things on a bigger scale where I can include members of the public to take part.

“I feel an activity like this is fun and interactive as well as a platform for the students to think about their future.”

Her previous teacher and headteacher of Sacred Heart, Michael Parker, said: “I had the pleasure of teaching Aysha and have known her for many years. She is an excellent role model and makes a great ambassador for Blackburn.

“Aysha spoke to our children about her journey and that her personality and passion for positive change is a major part of her vision.”

The Miss Lancashire finalist made the wings using cardboard herself, before encouraging the students to think about their goals and dreams.

She added: “Sacred Heart were instrumental in helping make my fundraiser happen. They got all of keystage two to participate, and every student engaged really well.

“I created the project about four years ago but never went ahead with it. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to finally carry it out with my Miss Lancashire fundraising.

“I made the wings using cardboard and stuck wood to the back of them to keep them sturdy. To add the dreamy look, I attached cotton wool to the sides, and sprayed it with glitter.”

The Miss Lancashire final takes place on Sunday at Preston Playhouse theatre.
