A COUNTY councillor has called for speed checks and measures to slow vehicles down on a residential road after an 11-year-old girl was injured in an accident on Monday,.

Oswaldtwistle Tory representative Cllr Peter Britcliffe yesterday wrote to Lancashire County Council’s Highways Department calling for action.

It followed a resident contacting him about the incident on Harvey Street in the town at 3.30pm on Monday who claimed there was a regular issue with fast-moving vehicles.

The air ambulance, North-West Ambulance Service and police were called out after the girl was involved in a collision with a car.

An NWAS spokeswoman said: “She was taken by road to the Royal Blackburn Hospital after sustaining minor injuries.”

Cllr Britcliffe said: “Harvey Street in Oswaldtwistle is a very open road and motorists do appear to speed along it.

“Increasing the dangers on this road are playing fields which lie on both sides of the road and attract many young people.

“I hope it is possible to do speed checks on this road and for illuminated speed warning signs and physical speed reduction measures to be installed.”

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said:”"We will investigate and consider any action which may be appropriate."
