A MUM scared off a burglar who attempted to break into her house while her 10-month-old daughter was asleep.

Padiham resident Sharon Grattan heard the man trying to smash through the back door of her Scott Street home shortly before 9pm on Tuesday.

Glass from the shattered door fell onto the floor of the back room, with baby Aria’s pram nearby.

Ms Grattan, who lives with partner James Parkinson, raced to her daughter’s bedroom after she thought the raider had broken into the house.

The 34-year-old, who has lived in the area for eight years, said: “All I could think was someone is in my house and I need to get my baby.”

The male suspect, described as 5ft 8in, medium build and wearing a grey hoodie, ran away before he got into the house after Ms Grattan shouted for her partner and phoned the police.

Lancashire Telegraph:

The former student at Gawthorpe High School said: “I had put my baby to bed just before 9pm and was laying on my bed playing on my phone.

“I heard a loud smash and ran into my daughter’s room while shouting at my partner to wake up as I thought somebody was in my house.

“I looked through Aria’s bedroom window as the man was leaning into the back door and he ran off.”

The family-of-three have already claimed £100 on their home insurance to pay for door repairs.

The attempted burglary comes a year after Ms Grattan’s house was raided and someone stole her house keys and she had to change her locks.

She added: “I will be completely honest the whole of Padiham has been experiencing this for over a year and nobody feels safe anymore.

“I would really like there to be more police presence,” Ms Grattan added.

No one has been arrested but police have said enquiries are ongoing.

A police spokesman said: “We were called to Scott Street, Burnley, at around 8.45pm on Tuesday to reports of a burglary.

“Someone tried to get in through the back door of the house and smashed a window. The occupant of the house was woken up and scared him off.”
