THERE are reports of two people injured after a shooting at a Christmas market in the French city of Strasbourg.

It is understood the incident happened to a Christmas market in one of the central squares in the city.

The area has been cordoned off by security officials, according to the BBC.

Armed police have been spotted at the scene. There are also reports the market was evacuated.

French journalist Poussard Bruno tweeted: "The situation remains very vague at this time from my building in the center of #Strasbourg.

"I'm safe with a friend.

"Law enforcement doesn't let anyone out.

"Small groups of military and police are still there."

There are also reports one person has been killed.

A video on Twitter appears to show one injured victim lying on the ground, amid a lot of panic.

Roland Ries‏, Strasbourg mayor, tweeted: "Serious event underway in the center of #Strasbourg.

"In the immediate future, thank you for staying at home.

"My first thoughts go to the victims."

Alain Fontanel, the deputy mayor of the city, tweeted: "Shooting DS the Centre Strasbourg.

"Thank you all for staying at home and waiting for a clarification of the situation."

The minister of the interior has tweeted a warning to those in the city to follow any advice given by the French government.
