TWO elderly people were taken to hospital in a critical condition following an accident on Monday afternoon.
A man and a woman were airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital after a head-on crash between a car and a van on Whalley Road at around 2.30pm.
Roads in the area were closed as emergency services dealt with the incident.
A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "We were called to the scene and sent two air ambulances, a senior clinician and a an ambulance.
"Two patients were both taken by Air Ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital. They are both in a critical condition.
"The man is suffering chest injuries and the woman has head injuries."
A police spokesperson confirmed they had closed of a section of Whalley Road between Woone Lane and the A59 due to a serious road traffic collision.
The road was closed for around two hours as a clean-up operation and investigation took place.
Two fire engines from Clitheroe and one from Great Harwood also attended the scene.
