NORTHERN Apprentices have played a role in improving two train stations.

Ten apprentices spent 12 months improving Burnley Manchester Road and Blackburn stations to provide travellers with a better travelling experience.

At Burnley Manchester Road, the students tidied up the station and installed three pieces of artwork. On platform one, Reedley Primary School were inspired to sketch, draw and paint all things Burnley.

An artist then used the children's handprints to create a community tree, a steel art installation to celebrate community links to the station.

Regional Director for Northern, Liam Sumpter said: "These 10 young people are still learning about the railway and are all employed in key departments across Northern, yet they have found the time to run these two fantastic projects and brighten the lives of people in East Lancashire."

On platform two, a sculpture was erected by Sobriety Society. The sculpture is shaped to represent canal locks and barges of the Leeds Liverpool Canal, which is an important part to Burnley's heritage.

Blackburn station was also given art work to liven it up, with local artist Alistair Nicholson completing two pieces, with one being a map highlighting the areas of interest in Blackburn.
