A SHOCKED shopper who found a bag containing hundreds of pounds of cash in a trolley did the right thing and reunited the money with its owner.

Shop owner Tahir Quddus has been praised for his public-spirited actions after he chanced upon the money at Farmfoods store on The Viaduct retail park in Accrington.

It had been left there by a local newsagent.

Mr Quddus, the owner of Taz-mania’s Gadget Shop in Blackburn Road, Accrington, went to get a trolley and found a bag in it on Sunday.

He opened it up and saw "a considerable amount of money".

He immediately went back to his car to call the police, who told him to hand it in to the nearest police station, but while speaking to police he noticed a man had come running towards the store.

The businessman had come back for his money after accidentally leaving the takings of his Accrington newsagents.

Mr Quddus said: “I went to the car to call the police because I didn’t want to go into the store with the money.

“After 10 minutes on the phone, I saw a car pull up quickly, and a man came rushing. I saw him looking towards the trolleys and then he came over to me.

“He said the money was his, so I told the police on the phone, who then spoke to him.”

The newsagent told them his identification was in the bag, and after checking, Mr Quddus confirmed this was true, and handed the bag of money back to its owner.

Mr Quddus added: "He thanked me very highly."
