OUR puzzle last week showed the ornate stonework which stands atop the grand main entrance of Corporation Park, from Preston New Road.

People pass it every day and many readers recognised it, but it was Christine Shaw who was first with the answer.

The handsome archway is flanked by two lodges, horse drawn carriages would drive through the main arch, with the smaller ones, used by pedestrians.

The stonework we features the borough arms.

Corporation Park is a traditional Victorian space and opened in 1857, creating a sensation both in the town and throughout East Lancashire.

Blackburn was deserted as the Mayor led the procession from the town hall to the official opening; shops and factories closed and it is estimated 60,000 attended the ceremony - 14,000 of them arriving by train from neighbouring towns.
