British singer Ed Sheeran beat heavyweights Pharrell, Eminem and John Legend to take the best male video award at last night's MTV Video Music Awards.
The 23-year-old took the award for Sing, saying he was glad he attended the annual event which was held in California.
Fellow nominee Sam Smith captivated the audience at this with a soulful performance of his former UK number one hit Stay With Me.
His act may not have featured the raunchy moves of Nicki Minaj or Beyonce, but the star-studded crowd, featuring Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry, was seen to be enthralled by the 19 year-old's performance.
The singer was introduced by reality star Kim Kardashian who referred to the "One to Watch" nominee as a "friend".
Jessie J, who recently announced her move to America where she said she is taken more seriously as a performer, teamed up with Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande for a performance of new single Bang Bang.
In another British-American duet Rita Ora, dressed in a black cut-out catsuit, joined Australian singer Iggy Azalea for a performance of Black Widow.
The talking point of the night came when Beyonce performed a medley of hits from some of her most memorable videos including Drunk In Love and XO.
The diva was presented with the top award of the night, the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, and drew cheers and applause from the crowd when her husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy joined her onstage.
The MTV VMAs will air on MTV UK at 9pm on tonight.
