The Montreal Canadiens brought rampaging Colorado Avalanche’s 10-game winning streak to a crashing halt with a 4-2 win at home.

Nicholas Deslauriers opened the scoring for Montreal after a goalless first period, followed by team-mate Alex Galchenyuk netting on a power play.

Jonathan Druin made it three for the hosts halfway through the third period before Nathan Mackinnon finally got Colorado on the board.

Montreal’s Brendan Gallagher answered four minutes on to take it to 4-1, while Colorado’s second came off the stick of JT Compher with less than 20 seconds left of the game.

In Detroit the Red Wings were edged by the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in overtime, with Travis Konecny scoring 27 seconds into the extra period.

Suspicions he was offside forced the goal to be reviewed by a video official, who awarded the point to see the Flyers take their fourth win in a row.

The clash between Nashville Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning also pushed outside regulation before Yanni Gourde lifted the Floridians 4-3 over their hosts after one minute and 45 seconds.

In Boston the Bruins beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2, while defending champions the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1.

Elsewhere the St Louis Blues beat the Ottawa Senators 3-0, with Carter Hutton celebrating his 10th career shutout after making 25 saves.
