AS Ashley Giles began to prepare his players for a schedule of six limited-overs matches in 10 days the Lancashire was left licking wounds in both the literal and metaphorical sense after a bruising Roses match in which any title aspirations Steven Croft’s side might harbour were put in perspective by their 175-run thrashing.

Fortunately, Giles’s casualty report was not as daunting as the reality of Lancashire’s defeat. Tom Bailey has a torn muscle in his side and will be out of action for six to eight weeks. Darwen's Alex Davies has a yet to be diagnosed knee problem and will certainly miss the next fortnight.

However, the blow Kyle Jarvis received on his finger was not as severe as first thought.

And the fortunate thing for the Old Trafford coaches as they think about sides for the Nat West T20 Blast games against Yorkshire at Old Trafford tonight and Notts Outlaws at Trent Bridge tomorrow is that Lancashire have a deep squad with cricketers like Saqib Mahmood, Jordan Clark, Gavin Griffiths and Arron Lilley ready to step up to the first team when required.

Equally importantly, given the injury to Davis, Jos Buttler should be available for a few games after being rested for the Roses match.

"We're still in a good position but we need to play more consistent," said Giles of Lancashire's start to the season which sees them top of the COunty Championship but winless from two T20 Blast matches.

"You have to be honest. Where did they (Yorkshire) outplay us? Which parts of the game did they go longer and harder than us? That's what good sides do - they're relentless.

"Overall I thought we fought well but clearly our skills did not match theirs although if we can replicate our home form we'll be fine.”

"As a coach you always linger more than defeat than victory but after six games you'd told me I'd be sitting here and we'd have won three, lost two and drawn one and be near the top of the table, I think we'd have taken it."

Looking ahead to the next week or so, Giles was pleased that Chorley's Tom Smith came through another four-day game “somewhere near his best" and he knows that his players could have no better incentive to regroup after their Roses defeat than the prospect of playing Yorkshire again in front of a sell-out Old Trafford crowd.

“We have back to back T20s and it will be loud and busy on Friday night so I'm sure the guys will be exhausted after that,” he added. “It should be a great night.”
