BLACKBURN Rovers are putting plans in place to offer new deals to members of their existing squad after their summer recruitment drive came to an end last week.

Rovers brought in eight new players before the transfer window shut on Wednesday and boss Steve Kean then jetted out to India two days later to meet club’s owners Venky’s.

Kean travels to their home city of Pune on a regular basis to discuss his plans for the club and contract extensions for some existing squad members were on the agenda at the latest meeting.

Rovers are already close to sealing a new deal with Junior Hoilett, whose current contract expires next summer, after negotiations.

And Kean now wants to open talks with further players to try to avoid even the slightest risk of losing key men on Bosman free transfers in the future.

The Rovers boss has mentioned no names publicly so far but Paul Robinson and Gael Givet have less than two years left on their current deals and could be among those in his thoughts.

David Dunn and Jason Roberts both have contracts currently due to expire next summer.

Rovers similarly handed new contracts to six players – Roberts, Phil Jones, Chris Samba, Ryan Nelsen, Michel Salgado and Mark Bunn – within the first few months under the new Venky’s regime.

Robinson signed a five-year deal when he joined Rovers from Tottenham in 2008 and Kean had spoken to the keeper about a new deal in January, revealing the 31-year-old had indicated he wanted to extend his Ewood Park stay.

But the player is yet to sign a new deal, indicating in April that he was instead trying to focus on keeping Rovers in the Premier League and hinting his future could not be guaranteed if the club were relegated.

Robinson was even linked with Liverpool at one point but Rovers stayed up and he went on to win the player of the season award, with the club ideally wanting to keep him for the rest of his career.

Givet has endured a difficult period after a dispute with the club over who was responsible for a payment due to the Inland Revenue, and Monaco were linked with an interest before the transfer window shut.

But, at 29, the versatile defender could still prove to be a useful asset for Rovers in the years to come should the club decide to offer him new terms.

New deals for rising stars who still have several years left on their contracts, something the club have sometimes opted to do in the past, cannot be ruled out either.

Steven Nzonzi, Martin Olsson and Samba have four years remaining on their deals.

Kean was not identifying the players concerned before he travelled to India but said of the Venky’s meeting: “It’s just really to discuss the business that we’ve done in the window and immediately start discussing the contract lengths of the lads who don’t have too long left on their contract.

“It’s just getting ourselves in a position where we can really come back and the lads I identify with the owners who should have extensions, I think we can get that started so we don’t find ourselves in a situation where people’s contracts are running out.”
