BLACKBURN town team U11s are on the road to Wembley after winning the Battle of Lancashire 7-a-side competition.

The talented young team showed they were the pride of the county after beating off rival borough teams in the tournament held at St Bede’s High School.

The competition was played in a league format with each team playing each other twice.

However there was a dramatic finale with Blackburn and Morecambe meeting in a play-off after both had finished on the same points and goal difference.

And it was the only goal of the game by Zehn Mohammed that booked Blackburn’s place in the Northern section finals in Sunderland next month.

Blackburn appeared to be coasting to the title as goals from Serhat Tasdemuir and Ryan McLean got Blackburn off to a flying start with a 2-0 win over Preston. A victory over Morecambe by the same scorline, Nathan Shaw and Zehn Mohammed, scoring made it two wins out of two. But defeats to Preston (2-1) and Morecambe (2-0) forced the play-off.

“This was a massive win for us,” said new town team manager Nathan Sargeson.

“The town team has taken a knock in recent years so when I took charge I wanted to get all the players to realise how much it means to play for Blackburn Schools.”

Blackburn now play in the northern section final with the winners getting the chance to play at Wembley in the national finals.

The Blackburn team included: Curtis Baker, Simon Wharton, Archie Twist, Adam Bruce, Jack West, Zehn Mohammed, Nathan Shaw, Callum Newton, Finton Kilpatrick, James Nightingale, Joe Bergquist, Daniel Barron.
